How to prepare your drinking chocolate

Step 1

Measure out 1.5 T of chocolate.

Step 2

Heat 3 oz of water until hot, but not boiling.

Step 3

Add water to chocolate, add a splash of milk or mylk, and using a frother (handheld or machine) or whisk, blend. You can also use a blender. The point is to get the chocolate nice and frothy.

Smoked Rosemary Cacao

A ritual for grieving what’s been uprooted

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 T chocolate

  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary

  • 3 oz cow, goat, or nondairy milk

  • Honey, to taste

  • Vanilla

Put some fresh rosemary and hold it gently. When we separate a plant from its soil, let us remember: we, too, have known an unwanted goodbye. Wash the sprig and burn it like a prayer.

Heat your milk and wave the smoke through it. Know you are the source of warmth, of water, of home.

As bubbles rise, add and whisk in chocolate and honey. Use your internal fire to create a sea foam-like texture, and add a dash of vanilla for comfort. Place the rosemary inside the cup and pour the chocolate over it.

Let it root again, in you. Let this cup be a home for what’s been lost. As you become the soil. The vessel.

Cooling Lemon & Sea Salt Cacao

A sacred brew for softening the edges of a weary soul

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 T. drinking chocolate

  • 3 oz water

  • Maple syrup, honey, or other sweetener of choice, to taste

  • Lemon zest, to taste

  • Salt, to taste

Boil water with care, and do not rush; as the heat of the day was meant to strengthen, not burn. When the water begins boiling, remove from heat. Stir in the chocolate, as much as feels right. Sweeten with maple syrup, which is the sap and offering from the tree. Add lemon zest for clarity, brightness & joy.

Pour the drink over a glass filled with ice and witness the transformation; the melting, the becoming. Finish with a pinch of sea salt, grounding you in the present.

This elixir calls you to rest and refresh after a long day. It is a return to your body. A perfect companion for summer walks, quiet evenings, or moments when you need to feel held by something gentle.

Drink, and begin again.
